PA Fun Run 2019

It was perfect weather for running yesterday as 170 runners readied themselves for the 1km, 5km and 10km runs around Almondsbury. There was a buzz of excitement as the crowds gathered at the start line ready to be sent on their way down Sundays Hill and round the course. The 1km was very quick as usual, with first person back in a record 4 minutes 39 seconds. This year the 1km race was won by Thomas Board. He was closely followed by Harry Rimmer, then Emily Board, to keep it in the family, who was the first girl back and a large number of children from key stage 2 and key stage 1 as well as pre-schoolers, who were followed by their parents. All were smiling as they crossed the finish line and then went to collect their medals.

It was then time for the 5 and 10km runs. The runners were all raring to go and run their socks off to try and win the race. After the count down the runners were off again down towards Church Road and onto Marsh Lane. It took just 21 minutes and 56 seconds for the first person, Rob Dixon, to come back round the corner and up towards school, closely followed by Zenon Sleeman in a time of 23 minutes. Well done to all of the participants who ran in the now sweltering heat. Well done to the Almondsbury children who ran the 5 and 10km race, including children from Key Stage 1 who ran 5km - impressive. The fastest 10km was Alan Wilcox in just over 41 minutes 40 seconds.

Once again, there were cheers from the crowds as the runners made their way up the hill. Many still had enough energy to run up to the line, what stamina! Well done to everyone who took part. There were well deserved bananas and drinks after the finish and a well-earned rest. The ice-creams also went down very well on such a sunny, hot day!

Thank you so much to the PA and especially Sue and Phil Wright for organising the event this year, as well as Chantelle Green, Kate Boorman and Kirsty Humphrey, and to all the PA for their continued efforts. The race raised a magnificent £978 for the PA funds.

A big thank you from the PA and school for the following companies who sponsored or provided water bottles for the Fun Run: Asda, Hydrock, Milburys, Rackham Planning, Anana, Momentum, Racks Bar; and Thornbury Running Club for loan of the signs and bibs, etc. Also a big thank you once again to the Keel and Clements family for the use of their land as well as all of the Marshalls who do a sterling job of keeping all the runners safe. Results, times and photos can be found on the school photos website page as well as the news page. The winners:

The Fun Run began around about 10 years ago. The lady with the original vision and who’s work led it to be established was called Shonagh Withey. Many of you may remember Shonagh and her children who used to come to the school before they moved to Devon a few years ago. Sadly, Shonagh passed away last summer from a long-standing illness. We thought it would be a fitting tribute to her memory to use some of the funds raised from this year’s Fun Run to establish a trophy in her name. This trophy ‘The Shonagh Withey Trophy for Sporting Endeavour’ will be presented every Sports Day in her honour. The child receiving the trophy may not always win gold medals but puts maximum effort, commitment and perseverance to sports – inspiring us all to try harder. We look forward to the first name being engraved on the trophy next week.
