Mathematics

At Almondsbury we have developed a whole school Maths curriculum which ensures progression of skills and knowledge from Reception through to Year 6. Our curriculum follows the White Rose small steps which aims to support children in becoming:

'Assured, happy and resilient mathematicians who relish the challenge of maths.' White Rose

The White Rose scheme breaks down each learning objective of the National Curriculum into small steps so that children develop a secure understanding of each step before moving on. The steps are carefully sequenced and adapted to suit the needs of our children and to ensure new skills are built on prior knowledge.

Our aim is that children at Almondsbury CE Primary School become:

'Independent, reflective thinkers, whose skills not only liberate them in maths but also support them across the curriculum.' White Rose.

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

As part of the learning process pupils are encouraged to develop their mental arithmetic through regular practise. At Almondsbury this takes the form of small group support, regular mental maths games and activities and a times table assessment system - Maths Attack. Each week the children challenge themselves against the clock.  This has a positive impact on the pupils’ mental maths strategies and recall of facts.

To support the children's learning of times tables at school and home we subscribe to Times Tables Rockstars and Numbots.

At the end of reception each child is given a small learning clock to take home so that parents can help their child learn to tell the time. Below are some links to helpful websites.
