PE and School Sport

At Almondsbury CE Primary School, we believe that every child should develop the confidence, competence and motivation to enjoy being physically active throughout their lives. Through high-quality PE, active play and a wide range of sporting opportunities, we aim to develop physically literate children who understand the importance of leading healthy, active lifestyles.

PE and School Sport is timetabled for a minimum of two hours each week across the school. In addition, children benefit from active playtimes, sporting events, clubs, competitions and outdoor learning opportunities.

The National Curriculum aims to ensure that all children:

  • Develop competence in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Experience competitive sport and physical challenges.
  • Understand how to lead healthy, active lives.

At Almondsbury, these aims are achieved through our Real PE curriculum, Platinum OPAL play provision, swimming programme, outdoor learning opportunities and participation in school sport.

 Our PE Curriculum

Our PE curriculum is based on the Real PE programme, which places physical literacy at the heart of learning. Through Real PE, children develop agility, balance and coordination alongside important personal skills such as resilience, teamwork, communication and problem-solving.

Real PE supports children to become confident movers and encourages them to challenge themselves, reflect on their learning and celebrate personal progress. We want every child to experience success in PE and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity.

Alongside the Real PE curriculum, we provide additional opportunities for children to experience sport-specific learning, allowing them to apply and develop their skills in a wider range of sports and activities.

 School Sport and Competition

Children have opportunities to participate in a wide range of sporting events, festivals and competitions throughout the year. We believe that competition helps children develop teamwork, determination, leadership and sportsmanship while promoting enjoyment and personal achievement.

Opportunities include:

  • Intra-house competitions
  • Inter-school festivals and tournaments
  • Sports Day
  • Leadership opportunities through Sports Council and Playground Leaders
  • Extra-curricular sports clubs

Swimming and Water Safety

As part of our commitment to keeping children safe and confident in and around water, we are proud to be part of the School Swimming and Water Safety Charter with Swim England

Through our swimming programme, children develop essential life skills, including water confidence, stroke development and an understanding of how to stay safe in and around water. By the end of Key Stage 2, we aim for all pupils to be able to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over at least 25 metres and to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Beyond the Curriculum

Physical activity is an important part of life at Almondsbury. Alongside PE lessons, children benefit from Forest Skills, active playtimes, leadership opportunities, extra-curricular clubs, wraparound provision and sporting events, all of which contribute to their physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

We also offer Bikeability training in Upper Key Stage 2, helping children to develop the skills and confidence to cycle safely on the road. This supports independence, road safety awareness and promotes active, healthy travel to and from school.

Our aim is for every child to leave Almondsbury with the confidence, skills and enthusiasm to enjoy a healthy and active future.

Platinum OPAL Play

We are proud to have achieved Platinum OPAL status, recognising our commitment to providing outstanding opportunities for outdoor play and physical activity.

Our playtimes are an important part of school life and give children opportunities to be active, creative, adventurous and social. Through high-quality play experiences, children develop physical competence, independence, resilience and confidence, further strengthening the physical literacy skills developed through PE lessons.

PE and Sport Premium
