We watched the Numberblocks episode 'Sixteen' ...

We revised the square numbers we have learnt so far - 1, 4, 9.

We learnt that number 16 is a 1 and a 6, and that the first 1 is actually a 10!

We learnt that the number 16 is another ‘teen number’. The teen numbers start with a 1. They are made up of 10 and a bit more. In the Numberblocks episode we saw that 10 and 6 make 16.

We practised writing the number 16 in the air, on our hands and on our friend’s backs.

We then practised counting to 16 on a number line and representing 16 on the playdough mats.

We watched the Numberblocks episode Square Club...

What is a square? Can you use the words ‘sides’ and ‘corners’ to describe a square?

Find the squares amongst the 2D shapes. What was the rule of square club? ‘Even though we’re different sizes, you can always recognise us. We are as tall as we are wide. We are the same turned on each side!’ use this to help identify the squares and discuss how squares can be different sizes as long as the sides are all the same length.

What is the next square number after 16? Use cubes to find out.  Watch the episode ‘We’re going on a square hunt’ to see if you are right!

We made the number 17 with a tens frame, Numicon, number line and ladybirds.

We used 17 cubes and a part, part whole to find ways of making 17, we recorded these as number sentences.
